Vancouver is located on the southwestern coast of British Columbia, occupying a peninsula bordered by the Pacific Ocean, Burrard Inlet to the north, and the Fraser River to the south. It sits within the Greater Vancouver region, which is anchored by the City of Vancouver itself as the largest urban centre in the province. The city is framed by the Coast Mountains to the north, offering dramatic mountain scenery that defines its skyline, while the Pacific Ocean and numerous surrounding waterways shape its geography at every turn. Vancouver's temperate oceanic climate brings mild, wet winters and warm, relatively dry summers, with average temperatures rarely reaching extremes in either direction. This geography places the city within easy reach of both alpine terrain and coastal environments, with ferry connections to Vancouver Island and proximity to communities throughout the Lower Mainland.
Vancouver is a major international city with a population of approximately 675,000 within city limits and over 2.5 million across the greater metropolitan area, making it the third-largest city in Canada. Its urban character is defined by a mosaic of distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own identity, ranging from dense downtown cores and vibrant cultural districts to quieter residential areas and waterfront communities. The city is known for its celebrated green spaces, including a large old-growth forested park situated adjacent to the downtown peninsula, as well as a renowned waterfront seawall, diverse cultural institutions, public markets, and a rich Indigenous heritage. Vancouver consistently ranks among the most livable cities in the world, attracting residents from across Canada and around the globe.
Vancouver's economy is one of the most diversified in Canada, with major sectors including technology and innovation, film and television production, finance, trade and logistics, tourism, and professional services. The Port of Vancouver is one of the busiest in North America, serving as a critical hub for Pacific trade. The city is also home to a significant post-secondary education and research sector, along with a robust healthcare industry. Residents benefit from an extensive range of amenities, including public transit, cultural venues, recreational facilities, shopping districts, dining, and green infrastructure. A well-developed transportation network connects Vancouver to surrounding municipalities and regional centres throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond. Climate
Weather & climate in Vancouver
Vancouver experiences an oceanic temperate climate, often described as one of the mildest in Canada. Winters are cool and wet, with average temperatures typically ranging from 3°C to 8°C along the coast, rarely dipping below freezing at sea level. Snowfall is uncommon and usually light, though the region occasionally experiences Arctic outflow events that push cold continental air through the Fraser Valley, bringing freezing temperatures and blustery winds to the Lower Mainland. Freezing rain can occur during these outflow episodes, and the surrounding mountains receive significant snowpack that supports regional watersheds.
Summers in Vancouver are pleasantly warm and comparatively dry, with average temperatures ranging from 18°C to 22°C, occasionally climbing into the high 20s during heat events. The city receives relatively little rainfall from July through August, creating a mild Mediterranean-like dry season. Morning fog is not uncommon along the waterfront and Burrard Inlet during transitional months. Wildfire smoke from interior BC fires can periodically affect summer air quality. Vancouver is notably one of the warmest winter cities in Canada, and its lush, green character reflects its reputation as a year-round temperate haven.
