Trout Lake is a small community located in the Lardeau Valley of the Kootenay region in southeastern British Columbia. It sits at the northern end of Trout Lake, one of the longest natural lakes in the province, and is nestled within a dramatic landscape of steep mountain ranges, old-growth forests, and pristine waterways. The nearest regional hub is Revelstoke, approximately 100 kilometres to the northwest, while the broader Kootenay centres of Kaslo and Nelson lie to the south. Trout Lake sits in a deep valley in the Selkirk Mountains of the Kootenay region and experiences a humid continental climate with strong inland temperate rainforest influences. Winters are long, cold, and notably snowy, with valley temperatures typically ranging from around -5°C to -15°C during the coldest months, and occasional dips well below -20°C during Arctic outflow events. The surrounding mountains intercept significant moisture from Pacific systems, resulting in heavy snowfall accumulations both in the valley and on adjacent slopes, making the area well known among backcountry enthusiasts. Summers are relatively short but pleasant, with average daytime temperatures ranging from approximately 20°C to 26°C, though heat events can push readings higher. Precipitation is fairly well distributed throughout the year, with a modest drying trend in mid-summer. Like much of interior BC, Trout Lake can experience periods of wildfire smoke in July and August, occasionally reducing air quality and visibility. The deep valley geography also promotes morning fog in shoulder seasons, while the surrounding peaks and ridgelines create localized wind patterns and notable variations in precipitation between the valley bottom and higher elevations.
