Trail is a small city located in the West Kootenay region of southeastern British Columbia, situated along the Columbia River approximately 660 kilometres east of Vancouver and roughly 11 kilometres north of the Canada-United States border. Trail sits in a deep valley along the Columbia River in the West Kootenay region and experiences a semi-arid continental climate, moderated somewhat by its low elevation of roughly 440 metres. Winters are relatively mild compared to many interior BC communities, with average temperatures typically ranging from around -2°C to -8°C, though cold snaps can push readings lower. Snowfall is moderate, generally accumulating less than communities at higher elevations nearby, and winter precipitation occasionally falls as rain or freezing rain during warmer Pacific-influenced periods. The surrounding mountains can channel and intensify cold outflow events at times. Summers in Trail are warm and dry, with average temperatures ranging from approximately 18°C to 28°C, and daytime highs occasionally exceeding 35°C during heat events. Precipitation drops significantly from June through August, and the region can experience wildfire smoke drifting in from fires across the BC Interior and beyond. The Columbia River valley creates a distinctive topographic corridor that influences local wind patterns and can trap valley fog, particularly in autumn and early winter. This valley geography contributes to Trail's notably warm, sunny summer character relative to much of the province.
