Terrace is situated in the Skeena Country of northwestern British Columbia, approximately 1,450 kilometres north of Vancouver and roughly 90 kilometres east of Prince Rupert on the coast. The community occupies a broad valley carved by the Skeena River, one of BC's most significant salmon-bearing rivers, and is surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges that rise steeply on all sides. Terrace sits in a temperate rainforest climate shaped by its position in the Skeena River valley, where Pacific moisture streams inland through coastal mountain gaps. Winters are notably mild for Northern BC, with temperatures typically ranging from around -5°C to +3°C, though cold Arctic outflow events can periodically push readings well below -15°C. Snowfall is substantial, often exceeding 200 centimetres seasonally, and the region also receives significant winter rainfall at lower elevations. Freezing rain can occur when milder Pacific air overrides colder valley air, creating hazardous conditions.
