About
About Surrey, BC
Surrey occupies the southwestern corner of British Columbia's Lower Mainland, bordered by the Fraser River to the north and the United States border to the south. It sits directly southeast of Vancouver, approximately 30 to 40 kilometres from the city's downtown core, and shares boundaries with several neighbouring municipalities including Delta, Langley, and Burnaby. The community's landscape is shaped by broad agricultural lowlands protected under the Agricultural Land Reserve, gently rolling terrain, and a shoreline along Boundary Bay in its southernmost reaches. Several rivers and creeks thread through the municipality, contributing to its varied natural character. Surrey enjoys a temperate oceanic climate typical of the Lower Mainland, with mild, wet winters and warm, relatively dry summers, making it one of the more comfortable year-round environments in Canada. Surrey is the second most populous city in British Columbia and one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the country, with a population approaching 600,000 residents. It encompasses a diverse range of neighbourhoods, from dense urban centres with high-rise development to quiet suburban subdivisions, agricultural rural areas, and established heritage districts. The city's character reflects tremendous cultural diversity, with communities representing backgrounds from across South Asia, East Asia, the Philippines, and many other regions of the world. This diversity is expressed through festivals, cultural institutions, and a rich variety of community gathering spaces. Several town centres serve distinct neighbourhood identities within the city, offering residents both a sense of local community and access to broader urban amenities. Heritage sites and green spaces, including large regional parks and protected green corridors, contribute to the city's livability. Surrey has developed a broad and diversified economic base that extends well beyond its historical agricultural roots, though farming remains a meaningful part of the local landscape through its extensive Agricultural Land Reserve holdings. The city supports a strong manufacturing and industrial sector, particularly in its northeastern districts, alongside a growing technology and innovation economy centred in its emerging downtown core. Healthcare, education, and public services represent major employment sectors, and the city hosts substantial post-secondary and research institutions that attract both students and skilled workers. Retail, hospitality, and construction industries also contribute significantly to local employment. Residents benefit from comprehensive transit connections, including SkyTrain rapid transit service linking Surrey to Vancouver and other regional centres, as well as an extensive network of parks, recreational facilities, libraries, and community services. Climate
Weather & climate in Surrey
Surrey, located in the southwestern corner of British Columbia, experiences an oceanic climate characterized by mild, wet winters and relatively warm, dry summers. Winter temperatures typically range from around 1°C to 7°C, with the city receiving the majority of its annual precipitation during these months, predominantly as rain. Snowfall occurs occasionally, generally accumulating to modest depths before melting quickly, though Arctic outflow events can periodically bring colder temperatures, freezing rain, and brief but significant snowfall to the region. The Fraser Valley's geography can funnel these outflow winds westward, occasionally intensifying their impact across Surrey's eastern areas. Summers in Surrey are generally pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from approximately 15°C to 24°C, punctuated by occasional warm spells pushing above 30°C. Rainfall decreases substantially from June through September, creating a distinct dry season. Like much of the Lower Mainland, Surrey can experience hazy conditions during summer months when wildfire smoke drifts in from BC's interior. Spring and autumn bring transitional weather marked by increasing cloud cover, morning fog along river corridors, and a gradual return of frontal rainfall systems moving inland from the Pacific.
