Sandspit is a small coastal community located on Moresby Island, the second-largest island in the Haida Gwaii archipelago, situated off the northern coast of British Columbia. It lies roughly 130 kilometres south of Prince Rupert on the mainland and approximately 1,100 kilometres northwest of Vancouver, making it one of the more remote communities in the province. The community sits along the shores of Hecate Strait, with the surrounding landscape defined by old-growth temperate rainforest, rugged mountain terrain, and the dramatic Pacific coastline. Sandspit is notably home to the only paved airstrip in Haida Gwaii, which serves as an important transportation link to the mainland. The climate is cool and maritime, characterized by mild temperatures year-round, high annual rainfall, and frequent overcast skies, all of which contribute to the lush, biodiverse environment the region is known for.
Sandspit is a small, rural, and remote community with a population of just a few hundred residents, giving it an intimate and close-knit character. Life here reflects a deep connection to the land, the ocean, and the rich cultural heritage of the Haida people, whose traditions and presence are woven throughout the entire Haida Gwaii region. The community maintains a quiet, self-sufficient atmosphere where outdoor recreation plays a central role in daily life, with opportunities for hiking, kayaking, fishing, and wildlife viewing readily accessible. Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site, one of Canada's most celebrated protected areas, is accessible from the southern end of Moresby Island and draws visitors from around the world who come to experience its ancient Haida village sites and extraordinary wilderness.
The economy of Sandspit has historically been tied to forestry, fishing, and related resource industries, which continue to form part of the local employment base alongside tourism and government services. The community's airport plays a logistical role not only for passenger travel but also for supporting broader activity across the islands. Residents have access to a range of essential services and amenities within the community and across Haida Gwaii, including grocery retail, health services, and community facilities, though the remote nature of the location means that larger urban amenities typically require travel to Prince Rupert or further afield. Tourism continues to grow in significance as visitors are drawn to the region's unparalleled natural beauty and cultural depth, supporting local accommodation, guiding, and hospitality enterprises. Climate
Weather & climate in Sandspit
Sandspit sits on the eastern shore of Moresby Island and experiences a cool, hyperoceanic temperate rainforest climate strongly shaped by its exposure to the North Pacific. Winters are mild and persistently wet, with average temperatures typically ranging from approximately 1°C to 7°C. Snowfall occurs but rarely accumulates significantly at sea level, as Pacific air masses keep temperatures above freezing for much of the season. Rainfall dominates from October through March, and strong southeast winds can drive sustained periods of heavy precipitation across the islands during winter storm events.
Summers in Sandspit are cool and relatively damp, with average temperatures generally ranging from about 10°C to 18°C. The community receives more sunshine than the western Haida Gwaii coastline, as its eastern orientation provides some shelter from the heaviest Pacific weather systems, making it comparatively drier than places like Masset or the outer islands. Wildfire smoke is rarely a concern given the region's persistent maritime moisture. Fog is a common transitional feature, particularly in spring and early summer, and persistent southeast and northwest winds are characteristic throughout the year, reflecting the island's exposed coastal geography.
Demographic vector IDs for this community are being locked in from the Statistics Canada 2021 Census. Check back shortly.
