Richmond is situated on a low-lying river delta in the southwestern corner of Metro Vancouver, occupying Lulu Island and several smaller islands at the mouth of the Fraser River. Winters are cool and wet, with average temperatures typically ranging from around 1°C to 8°C. Snowfall is infrequent and usually light, as Richmond's low elevation and coastal position moderate temperatures. However, periodic Arctic outflow events can push temperatures well below freezing and bring brief but significant snowfalls, occasionally causing icy conditions. Rainfall dominates the winter months, and the region frequently experiences overcast skies from November through February. Summers in Richmond are comfortably warm and comparatively dry, with average temperatures ranging from roughly 13°C to 24°C, though occasional heat events can push readings higher.
