About Richmond
Richmond is situated on a low-lying river delta in the southwestern corner of Metro Vancouver, occupying Lulu Island and several smaller islands at the mouth of the Fraser River. It lies directly south of Vancouver, separated from the city by the Fraser River's north arm, and is connected to the broader region by bridges, the Canada Line rapid transit system, and major road corridors. The community borders the Strait of Georgia to the west and agricultural flatlands to the south and east, with the North Shore mountains visible on the horizon. Because of its delta geography, Richmond sits at or near sea level, which shapes both its landscape and its urban planning. The climate is mild and temperate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters typical of the Lower Mainland, and the area experiences relatively low snowfall compared to inland communities.
Richmond is a mid-to-large city with a population of approximately 220,000 residents, making it one of the most populous municipalities in British Columbia. It blends urban density in its town centre with extensive suburban neighbourhoods, waterfront communities, and protected agricultural land under the Agricultural Land Reserve. The city is notably multicultural, with a significant Asian Canadian population that has shaped its culinary scene, festivals, cultural institutions, and community character. Richmond is home to a riverfront heritage village that preserves its historic fishing industry roots, and the city maintains a network of dykes, parks, and trails that offer scenic views of the Fraser River and the surrounding wetlands. Vancouver International Airport, one of Canada's busiest airports, is also located within Richmond's boundaries.
Richmond's economy is diverse and robust, anchored by its role as a major logistics and transportation hub given the presence of the international airport and its access to the Fraser River and regional highway networks. Retail and commercial activity is concentrated in several significant shopping and business districts that draw visitors from across the region. The food processing, technology, film and television production, and warehousing and distribution industries also contribute meaningfully to the local employment base. Agriculture remains a presence through the city's protected farmland, supporting small-scale farming operations. Residents enjoy a comprehensive range of amenities including transit access, recreational facilities, community centres, healthcare services, and diverse dining and retail options, all within a well-connected urban environment.
