Refuge Cove is a small, remote coastal community located on West Redonda Island in the northern reaches of Desolation Sound, within the Sunshine Coast region of British Columbia. Situated roughly 200 kilometres northwest of Vancouver, the settlement is accessible only by water or floatplane, as no road connections exist to the mainland or to neighbouring islands. The surrounding landscape is defined by dramatic fjords, old-growth forests, steep granite mountains, and the deep, sheltered waters of Desolation Sound, which is widely regarded as one of the most scenic cruising destinations on the Pacific Coast. The region experiences a temperate coastal climate, with relatively mild winters and warm summers, though the area's remote position and mountainous terrain can bring periods of heavy rainfall and variable weather throughout the year.
Refuge Cove is among the smallest and most isolated communities in British Columbia, with a year-round population of only a handful of permanent residents. Its character is distinctly remote and self-reliant, attracting individuals and families who embrace a lifestyle deeply connected to the natural environment, the sea, and a strong sense of community independence. During the summer months, the community's population swells considerably as boaters, kayakers, and recreational mariners converge on Desolation Sound, drawn by its warm anchorages and exceptional natural beauty. The cove itself has long served as a waypoint and gathering place for those travelling the coastal waterways, lending the community a unique heritage rooted in maritime tradition and the rhythms of life on the water.
The local economy is small in scale and shaped almost entirely by the community's geographic isolation and its role as a service point for marine traffic. Seasonal tourism and the boating industry form the backbone of economic activity, with the community providing basic marine services and supplies to visiting vessels during the busier summer season. A small number of full-time residents support this seasonal economy through hands-on, self-sufficient livelihoods that may include fishing, small-scale trades, and caretaking roles. General amenities are extremely limited given the community's remote setting, and residents rely on periodic supply runs and travel to larger centres such as Campbell River or Powell River for a broader range of goods and services. §5 · CLIMATE
Weather & climate in Refuge Cove
Refuge Cove, situated on West Redonda Island within the northern reaches of the Sunshine Coast region, experiences a coastal temperate rainforest climate shaped by its deeply sheltered position within Desolation Sound. Winters are mild and wet, with temperatures typically ranging from approximately 1°C to 7°C. Snowfall is infrequent and rarely persistent, as the surrounding mountains and inland waterways moderate conditions considerably. Rainfall dominates the cooler months, and occasional Arctic outflow events can bring brief but sharp cold snaps and gusty easterly winds funnelling through the coastal inlets.
Summers are pleasantly warm and relatively dry, with temperatures generally ranging from around 15°C to 24°C. Desolation Sound is renowned for having some of the warmest saltwater temperatures on Canada's Pacific coast, a distinctive feature tied to its sheltered geography and limited tidal flushing. Wildfire smoke from Interior BC can drift into the area during dry summer stretches. Morning fog is not uncommon in transitional seasons, and afternoon sea breezes provide natural cooling. The region experiences a pronounced wet season from October through March and a notably drier period through the summer months.
