Radium Hot Springs is a small village located in the Columbia River Valley in the southeastern corner of British Columbia, nestled at the convergence of the Rocky Mountains and the Purcell Mountains. It sits at the northern entrance to Kootenay National Park, approximately 140 kilometres north of Cranbrook and roughly 580 kilometres east of Vancouver via the Trans-Canada Highway. The community straddles the Columbia River wetlands, a significant ecological feature supporting diverse wildlife, while the surrounding landscape is defined by dramatic mountain peaks, forested slopes, and the broad valley floor. The climate is relatively mild for a mountain community, with warm, dry summers and moderate winters, influenced in part by its sheltered valley position.
Radium Hot Springs carries the character of a small mountain village, with a permanent population of fewer than 1,000 residents, though that number swells considerably during the tourism seasons. The community has a relaxed, outdoor-oriented lifestyle shaped by its proximity to two national parks — Kootenay and Banff — as well as the Columbia River Wetlands, a UNESCO-designated Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The namesake hot springs, a naturally occurring geothermal feature that has drawn visitors for well over a century, form a central part of the community's identity and character. Life here tends to revolve around the natural environment, with recreational pursuits including hiking, cycling, wildlife viewing, and golf among the most popular activities for residents and visitors alike.
The economy of Radium Hot Springs is driven primarily by tourism and hospitality, with the village serving as a gateway destination for travellers exploring the national parks and the broader Columbia Valley. Seasonal accommodation, dining, and recreational services form a substantial portion of the local employment base, while golf and outdoor recreation also contribute meaningfully to economic activity. The Columbia Valley more broadly supports agriculture, ranching, and some light commercial activity, and the region has historically been connected to forestry and resource industries. Residents have access to everyday amenities including grocery services, fuel, dining options, and basic health and professional services within the village and the surrounding valley communities, with more comprehensive services available in larger regional centres such as Cranbrook and Invermere. Climate
Weather & climate in Radium Hot Springs
Radium Hot Springs sits at the southern end of the Rocky Mountain Trench and experiences a semi-arid, continental climate moderated by its relatively low valley elevation of approximately 800 metres. Winters are cold but generally milder than surrounding mountain communities, with average temperatures typically ranging from around -10°C to 0°C between December and February. Snowfall accumulates through the winter months, though the valley bottom receives considerably less snow than nearby mountain passes. Occasional cold Arctic outflow events can push temperatures significantly lower, but extended deep-freeze periods are less common here than in more exposed interior locations.
Summers in Radium Hot Springs are warm and relatively dry, with average daytime highs ranging from approximately 25°C to 30°C in July and August, making it one of the sunnier and warmer communities in the Kootenay region. The area lies in a distinct rain shadow created by the surrounding Rockies and Purcell Mountains, limiting summer precipitation. Wildfire smoke from regional fires occasionally affects air quality during drier stretches. The Columbia River valley corridor also funnels seasonal winds through the area, and morning valley fog is a recognizable transitional feature in spring and autumn.
