Prince George experiences a sub-boreal continental climate, characterized by cold, snowy winters and warm summers with moderate precipitation. Winter temperatures typically range from around -8°C to -15°C on average, though Arctic outflow events can push readings well below -30°C during prolonged cold snaps. Snowfall is substantial, with the city receiving approximately 180 to 220 centimetres annually, and snow cover generally persists from November through March. Freezing fog is a notable winter phenomenon, forming during calm, cold conditions and occasionally persisting for days at a time in the valley bottom. Summers in Prince George are pleasantly warm, with average daytime highs ranging from roughly 22°C to 26°C, while evenings remain relatively cool. Precipitation is modest in summer, though afternoon thunderstorms can occur. The city and surrounding region are increasingly affected by wildfire smoke during July and August, a pattern that has become more pronounced in recent decades.
