Port Mellon is a small unincorporated community situated on the eastern shore of Howe Sound, in the southern portion of British Columbia's Sunshine Coast. It lies within the Sunshine Coast Regional District and is accessed primarily via Highway 101, which connects it to the nearby town of Gibsons roughly eight kilometres to the northwest. Although Port Mellon sits geographically close to Metro Vancouver, it is separated from the city by Howe Sound and is accessible from Vancouver by BC Ferries service from Horseshoe Bay to Langdale, placing it approximately one hour from the Lower Mainland when travel time and ferry crossing are combined. The community is framed by the rugged coastal mountains that rise steeply from the shoreline, and the waters of Howe Sound define its western edge. The climate is mild and marine in character, with relatively wet winters, warm and drier summers, and moderate temperatures year-round compared to inland regions of the province. Port Mellon sits at the head of Howe Sound on the Sunshine Coast and experiences a temperate oceanic climate with strong rainforest characteristics, shaped by its position between the Coast Mountains and the sheltered waters of the sound. Winters are mild and wet, with average temperatures typically ranging from around 1°C to 7°C. Snowfall occurs occasionally but rarely accumulates for long at sea level, while rainfall dominates from November through March. The community can be exposed to Arctic outflow events that funnel cold, dry air southward through Howe Sound, temporarily dropping temperatures and producing gusty winds. Summers in Port Mellon are comfortably warm and drier, with average temperatures generally ranging from 14°C to 22°C, though occasional warm spells can push readings higher. July and August bring the driest conditions of the year, and the area can experience wildfire smoke drifting in from Interior BC during prolonged dry stretches. As a transitional season feature, spring and fall bring frequent cloud, moderate rainfall, and shifting winds.
