Mackenzie is a small town located in the Northern Interior of British Columbia, situated approximately 183 kilometres south of Fort St. John and roughly 1,200 kilometres northeast of Vancouver. It lies at the southern end of Williston Lake, the largest reservoir in British Columbia and one of the largest in North America by surface area, created by the construction of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam on the Peace River. Mackenzie sits in British Columbia's sub-boreal interior, experiencing a continental subarctic climate characterized by long, cold winters and relatively short summers. Winter temperatures typically range from around -10°C to -25°C, with periods of more extreme cold occasionally pushing below -30°C during Arctic outflow events that funnel cold air southward through the Rocky Mountain Trench. Snowfall is substantial, generally accumulating from November through March, with the surrounding Omineca and Rocky Mountain ranges contributing to significant seasonal snowpack. Precipitation during winter falls almost entirely as snow, and prolonged cold snaps with clear skies are common. Summers in Mackenzie are brief but can be genuinely warm, with typical daytime highs ranging from 18°C to 25°C between June and August, occasionally reaching into the low 30s during heat events. The region receives moderate summer rainfall, and wildfire smoke from fires across northern BC and neighbouring Alberta can periodically reduce air quality and visibility during dry spells. Spring and fall are transitional and often unpredictable, with rapidly shifting temperatures and the possibility of frost occurring in any month outside of the core summer period.
