Logan Lake is a small municipality located in the Highland Valley of British Columbia's Southern Interior, nestled in the mountains of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District. Situated approximately 80 kilometres southwest of Kamloops and roughly 300 kilometres northeast of Vancouver, the community sits at an elevation of around 1,100 metres above sea level, surrounded by forested hillsides, open rangeland, and a series of small lakes that give the area much of its natural character. The nearby Highland Valley is defined by its rugged terrain and wide open landscapes, while the broader region connects to major highway corridors linking the Interior to the Lower Mainland. The climate reflects the community's elevated position, with cool, snowy winters and mild, pleasant summers that appeal to those who enjoy a four-season mountain environment.
Logan Lake is a small town with a tight-knit, close community feel that reflects its origins as a planned resource community established in the early 1970s to support nearby mining operations. With a population of roughly 2,000 residents, it offers a distinctly rural character while maintaining the core services and infrastructure of a functioning municipality. The town is compact and walkable, with a community centre and recreational facilities that serve as gathering points for residents. Its relative remoteness and mountain surroundings give it a peaceful, outdoors-oriented atmosphere, and the area is popular with residents who enjoy activities such as fishing, hiking, snowmobiling, and wildlife viewing in the surrounding landscape.
The economy of Logan Lake is anchored primarily by the mining sector, with one of the largest open-pit copper and molybdenum mines in Canada located in the Highland Valley just outside of town. This single industry has historically been the dominant source of employment for the community and continues to shape its economic identity. Beyond mining, local employment is supported by public sector roles, trades, and community services. The town provides residents with essential amenities including general retail, medical services, recreation facilities, and local government infrastructure, giving it a degree of self-sufficiency relative to its size. While larger regional centres such as Merritt and Kamloops are within reasonable driving distance for expanded shopping and services, Logan Lake maintains the amenities needed for everyday living. §5 · CLIMATE
Weather & climate in Logan Lake
Logan Lake sits at an elevation of roughly 1,080 metres in the Highland Valley of the Southern Interior, giving it a semi-arid continental highland climate. Winters are cold and moderately snowy, with average temperatures typically ranging from around -5°C to -12°C, though overnight lows can occasionally dip below -20°C during Arctic outflow events that push cold air southward through the Interior plateau. Snowfall is reliable from November through March, and the elevated terrain means accumulations tend to be more substantial than in lower-lying valley communities nearby.
Summers in Logan Lake are warm and relatively dry, with average daytime highs generally falling between 22°C and 28°C, and cooler evenings owing to the community's elevation. July and August are the driest months, and like much of the Southern Interior, Logan Lake is subject to wildfire smoke during peak fire season, which can periodically affect air quality. Spring and autumn bring transitional weather including variable winds, cool overnight temperatures, and a notable freeze-thaw cycle. The surrounding highland landscape contributes to localized weather patterns, with fog occasionally settling in the valley during cooler shoulder seasons.
