Kamloops is located at the confluence of the North and South Thompson Rivers in the southern interior of British Columbia, approximately 355 kilometres northeast of Vancouver and roughly 110 kilometres east of Cache Creek. Positioned within the Thompson-Nicola region, the city sits at the meeting point of several distinct landscapes, including semi-arid grasslands, rolling hills, and forested plateaus that characterize the surrounding terrain. The area is flanked by mountains and dotted with numerous lakes, most notably Kamloops Lake to the west, which feeds into the Thompson River system. The climate is notably dry and sunny, with hot summers and relatively mild winters by interior BC standards, making it one of the warmest and most sun-drenched cities in the province.
Kamloops is a full-service city with a population of approximately 100,000 people, making it the largest urban centre in the Thompson-Nicola region and one of the larger cities in British Columbia outside the Lower Mainland and Okanagan. The community offers a dynamic mix of urban amenities and easy access to an extraordinary range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, skiing, and golf. The city has a well-established downtown core with a vibrant cultural presence, and its history as a fur trade post and ranching hub has shaped a strong sense of regional identity. Residents enjoy a lifestyle that balances the conveniences of a mid-sized city with the natural abundance of the surrounding landscape.
The Kamloops economy is broad and diverse, with significant contributions from healthcare, education, retail trade, transportation, and construction sectors. The city serves as a regional hub for commerce and services, drawing residents and workers from surrounding smaller communities across the Thompson-Nicola region. Ranching and agriculture have historically played an important role in the area's identity, and those industries continue to operate throughout the surrounding valleys and benchlands. Forestry and resource industries also remain part of the economic fabric, while tourism is a growing contributor given the region's outdoor recreation appeal and its position along major transportation corridors connecting the BC interior to the coast and Alberta. Residents have access to a full range of amenities, including post-secondary education, regional healthcare facilities, professional services, and a wide variety of shopping and dining options. Climate
Weather & climate in Kamloops
Kamloops sits in the Thompson River valley of British Columbia's Southern Interior and carries a semi-arid, cold semi-arid (BSk) climate classification under the Köppen system — one of the driest climates in Canada. Winters are generally cold but relatively mild by interior BC standards, with average temperatures ranging from approximately -3°C to -9°C in the coldest months. Snowfall is modest compared to many neighbouring regions, typically accumulating 50 to 70 centimetres annually, and the area occasionally experiences Arctic outflow events that push temperatures significantly lower for short periods. Rain during winter months is limited, and long stretches of cold, clear, calm weather are common.
Summers in Kamloops are hot and dry, with average highs routinely reaching 30°C to 35°C between June and August, making it one of the warmest cities in Canada. Precipitation is sparse in summer, and the region sits in a natural rain shadow created by surrounding mountain ranges. Wildfire smoke is a recurring seasonal feature, often reducing air quality and visibility during July and August. Spring and fall transitions tend to be brief, and the Thompson Valley's orientation contributes to notable wind corridor effects during transitional seasons.
