Hazelton is a small village located in the Skeena Country of northwestern British Columbia, situated at the confluence of the Skeena and Bulkley Rivers approximately 300 kilometres east of Prince Rupert and roughly 1,100 kilometres north of Vancouver. The surrounding landscape is defined by dramatic mountain terrain, broad river valleys, and dense boreal and temperate forest, with the iconic Rocher Deboule mountain range forming a striking backdrop to the community. The area experiences a northern interior climate, characterized by cold winters with significant snowfall, warm summers, and a relatively short growing season, though the river valleys provide some moderating influence on temperatures throughout the year.
Hazelton is a small, rural village with a population of only a few hundred residents, though it forms part of a broader cluster of communities that includes New Hazelton and South Hazelton nearby. The area carries deep historical and cultural significance as the ancestral territory of the Gitxsan and Wet'suwet'en peoples, whose rich heritage remains a living and integral part of the region's identity. The community has a close-knit, small-town character shaped by its remote setting, with residents drawn to an outdoor lifestyle defined by fishing, hiking, and exploration of the surrounding wilderness. The 'Ksan Historical Village, a reconstructed Gitxsan village near the confluence of the two rivers, stands as one of the most culturally significant landmarks in northern British Columbia and draws visitors from across the province and beyond.
The economy of the Hazelton area has historically been rooted in natural resource industries, including forestry, mining, and agriculture in the river valleys, with Indigenous tourism and cultural heritage playing an increasingly prominent role in the local economic fabric. The broader Hazelton area offers a range of essential amenities and services to support daily living, including access to health care, retail, and community services distributed across the cluster of nearby communities. Transportation links include the Yellowhead Highway, which connects the area to both Prince Rupert to the west and Prince George to the east, providing residents with access to larger regional centres for expanded services and employment. The community's remote location and resource-based economy reflect the character of many small northern British Columbia communities, where the natural environment and cultural heritage shape both livelihoods and daily life. §5 · CLIMATE
Weather & climate in Hazelton
Hazelton sits at the confluence of the Skeena and Bulkley rivers in northwestern British Columbia and experiences a sub-boreal continental climate, moderated somewhat by Pacific moisture funnelled through the river valleys. Winters are cold and snowy, with average temperatures typically ranging from around -5°C to -15°C, though Arctic outflow events can drive temperatures significantly lower. Snowfall is substantial, generally accumulating between 150 and 250 centimetres seasonally, and the surrounding mountain terrain can trap cold air in the valley, prolonging frosty periods. Freezing rain and mixed precipitation occasionally occur during transitional weather patterns.
Summers are warm and relatively short, with average daytime temperatures ranging from approximately 18°C to 26°C, and occasional peaks beyond 30°C during heat events. Precipitation drops noticeably in summer, creating a drier season typical of the interior river valley influence, though convective thunderstorms can bring brief, heavy rainfall. Wildfire smoke from regional and provincial fires has become an increasingly common summer feature. Spring and autumn bring dramatic transitions, with valley fog a notable characteristic, particularly in September and October as temperature inversions settle over the river corridors.
