Furry Creek is a small residential community situated along the eastern shore of Howe Sound in British Columbia's Sea-to-Sky Corridor, approximately 50 kilometres north of Vancouver and roughly 30 kilometres south of Squamish. The community lies within the District of Squamish and is flanked by the dramatic coastal mountains that define this stretch of the province. The waters of Howe Sound form its western edge, while steep, forested mountain slopes rise sharply to the east, creating a striking natural setting that is characteristic of the broader Sea-to-Sky region. The climate is mild and maritime, with relatively wet winters and comfortable summers, and the area receives considerably more precipitation than Vancouver's inner suburbs due to its position within the coastal mountain terrain.
Furry Creek is a quiet, low-density community with a distinctly residential and recreational character. Its population is small, numbering only in the hundreds, giving it the feel of an intimate enclave rather than a conventional suburb or town centre. The community is perhaps best known for its golf course situated along the water's edge, which takes advantage of the remarkable scenery and serves as a focal point of the local landscape. Residents tend to enjoy a lifestyle deeply connected to the outdoors, with hiking, cycling, kayaking, and skiing all accessible within a short distance. The Sea-to-Sky Highway passes directly through the area, making Furry Creek a convenient point along one of British Columbia's most scenic and well-travelled driving corridors.
The local economy in Furry Creek itself is limited, with the community functioning largely as a residential retreat rather than a commercial hub. Employment is predominantly drawn from the broader Sea-to-Sky Corridor, with Squamish and Vancouver serving as the primary centres for work and services. The golf and tourism sectors contribute to the local economic identity, drawing visitors to the area throughout the warmer months. Day-to-day amenities are modest within Furry Creek itself, and residents typically travel to Squamish or the North Shore communities for more comprehensive shopping, healthcare, and recreational services. The community's position along the Sea-to-Sky Highway ensures reasonable access to a wider range of employment and services while preserving the sense of seclusion that defines life in Furry Creek. §5 · CLIMATE
Weather & climate in Furry Creek
Furry Creek sits along the eastern shore of Howe Sound between Squamish and Horseshoe Bay, and its climate falls within the humid oceanic zone, with strong coastal temperate rainforest characteristics. Winters are mild and wet by Canadian standards, with temperatures typically ranging from around 0°C to 6°C at sea level, though cold Arctic outflow events can push readings well below freezing and bring blustery, dry winds funnelling down from the Fraser and Squamish river valleys. Snowfall occurs but rarely accumulates for long at lower elevations, while freezing rain and ice can pose hazards during sharp cold snaps. Annual precipitation is substantial, much of it falling as rain between October and March.
Summers are pleasantly mild, with average temperatures generally between 15°C and 24°C, moderated by the marine influence of Howe Sound. Rainfall decreases noticeably from June through August, though the region never enters a true drought. Howe Sound acts as a natural wind corridor, and afternoon outflow winds in summer can be brisk and refreshing. Wildfire smoke from interior BC occasionally drifts into the area during dry stretches. Fog and low cloud are common transitional-season features, particularly in autumn, giving Furry Creek a distinctly moody coastal atmosphere.
