Craigellachie is a small unincorporated community located in the Shuswap region of British Columbia's Southern Interior, situated along the Trans-Canada Highway approximately 30 kilometres west of Revelstoke and roughly 80 kilometres east of Salmon Arm. Nestled within the Columbia Mountains, the area is surrounded by dramatic mountain terrain and dense coniferous forest, with the Eagle River running nearby and Craigellachie Creek flowing through the immediate vicinity. The landscape reflects the rugged character of the Interior Wet Belt, and the local climate features warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters, a pattern typical of Interior mountain valleys in British Columbia.
Craigellachie is a rural and relatively remote community with a very small permanent population, giving it a quiet, close-knit character quite distinct from nearby regional centres. The community is perhaps best known as the historic site where, on November 7, 1885, the Last Spike of the Canadian Pacific Railway was driven, completing the country's first transcontinental rail line. This nationally significant event is commemorated at a well-visited heritage site along the highway, drawing travellers and history enthusiasts from across Canada and beyond. The pace of life here is unhurried, with the surrounding wilderness offering abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation including fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing throughout the seasons.
The economy of Craigellachie and the surrounding area has historically been anchored in resource-based industries, particularly forestry and related activities that remain important throughout this corridor of the Interior. Tourism also plays a meaningful role, with the historic Last Spike site attracting visitors travelling the Trans-Canada corridor between the Lower Mainland and the Rocky Mountains. Highway-oriented services support travellers passing through the region, and residents typically access a broader range of amenities, services, and employment opportunities in the larger nearby communities of Salmon Arm and Revelstoke. While the local area is not a major commercial hub, its proximity to regional centres and the recreational richness of the surrounding landscape contribute to its appeal as a rural retreat. §5 · CLIMATE
Weather & climate in Craigellachie
Craigellachie sits in the Columbia River valley in British Columbia's Southern Interior, experiencing a semi-arid to humid continental climate shaped by its position between the Monashee and Selkirk mountain ranges. Winters are cool to cold, with average temperatures typically ranging from approximately -5°C to 2°C, though overnight lows can dip significantly during Arctic outflow events that funnel cold air through the valley corridor. Snowfall is moderate, and the valley bottom often experiences freezing rain or mixed precipitation as milder Pacific air overrides colder surface air, a common occurrence in Interior valley systems during winter months.
Summers are warm and relatively dry, with average daytime temperatures ranging from roughly 25°C to 30°C, and evenings cooling comfortably. July and August bring the driest conditions of the year, and the region is increasingly prone to wildfire smoke during this period, a characteristic shared across much of the Southern Interior. Spring and autumn are transitional seasons marked by variable precipitation, morning valley fog, and fluctuating temperatures. The surrounding mountains contribute to localized weather patterns and influence precipitation distribution across the broader area.
