Coldstream is a district municipality located in the North Okanagan region of British Columbia, situated immediately southeast of Vernon and approximately 440 kilometres east of Vancouver. Nestled between the Coldstream Valley and the eastern shores of Kalamalka Lake, the community enjoys a striking natural setting defined by rolling hills, open ranchland, and some of the most celebrated lake scenery in the province. Kalamalka Lake, often described as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world for its vivid turquoise and emerald hues, forms a defining geographic feature of the area. The surrounding terrain includes forested hillsides and agricultural benchland, and the semi-arid Okanagan climate delivers warm, dry summers and relatively mild winters, making outdoor living a year-round pursuit for residents.
Coldstream carries a distinctly rural and semi-rural character, blending agricultural heritage with suburban residential living on the edges of the greater Vernon urban area. With a population of approximately 10,000 residents, it functions as a quieter, more spacious alternative to Vernon while remaining closely connected to that city's full range of services and amenities. The community has deep roots in ranching and fruit farming, and large historic properties and working orchards remain visible throughout the landscape, lending Coldstream a sense of heritage and continuity that distinguishes it from more purely residential suburbs. Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, which borders the community, provides residents with exceptional access to hiking trails, beaches, and natural wilderness just minutes from home.
The economy of Coldstream is closely integrated with that of the broader Vernon area, which serves as the main regional employment and commercial hub. Agriculture continues to play a meaningful role locally, with orcharding, viticulture, and livestock operations contributing to the community's rural identity. Many residents commute into Vernon for employment across sectors including healthcare, retail, education, hospitality, and construction, all of which are well represented in the region. The North Okanagan area has seen growing interest in tourism, technology, and small business activity, broadening the local employment base in recent years. Coldstream itself offers basic everyday amenities, while Vernon provides comprehensive shopping, dining, recreational facilities, and professional services within a short drive. §5 · CLIMATE
Weather & climate in Coldstream
Coldstream is a municipality in the North Okanagan, situated in the valley bottom near Vernon and Kalamalka Lake. The area experiences a semi-arid, cold semi-arid climate (Köppen BSk), shaped by its interior location and surrounding mountain terrain. Winters are cold and relatively dry compared to coastal British Columbia, with daytime temperatures typically ranging from around -2°C to -8°C and overnight lows occasionally dipping below -15°C during Arctic outflow events. Snowfall is moderate, generally accumulating between 60 and 90 centimetres seasonally, with periods of freezing rain and ice fog occurring when temperature inversions settle into the valley.
Summers in Coldstream are warm to hot and largely dry, with daytime highs commonly ranging from 28°C to 35°C between June and August. Precipitation is limited during summer months, and the region frequently experiences wildfire smoke from interior and provincial fires, which can significantly reduce air quality and visibility. Spring and autumn bring transitional fog and temperature swings as valley cold air pools interact with warming trends. The Okanagan Valley's orientation and topography create notable micro-climates, and the broader region is recognized as one of Canada's sunniest and driest inland areas.
