§4 · ABOUT
About Clinton, BC
Clinton is a small community located in the South Cariboo region of British Columbia's Southern Interior, situated along Highway 97 approximately 260 kilometres northeast of Vancouver and about 90 kilometres south of Williams Lake. Nestled at an elevation of roughly 1,000 metres, the area is characterized by rolling benchlands, open grasslands, and ponderosa pine forests that define the landscape of the Bonaparte Plateau. The community sits near the confluence of several creek systems and is surrounded by ranchland and rangeland that stretch toward the surrounding hills. Clinton experiences a semi-arid continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and warm, dry summers, making it a distinctive four-season community in the interior of the province. Clinton is a small rural village with a population of approximately 600 to 700 residents, and it carries a strong sense of place rooted in its history as one of the oldest communities in British Columbia's interior. Its origins trace back to the Gold Rush era of the 1860s, when the community served as an important stop along the historic Cariboo Wagon Road that connected the coast to the goldfields of the Cariboo region. That heritage remains a point of community pride today. The lifestyle in Clinton is quiet and rural, appealing to those drawn to wide-open spaces, outdoor recreation, and a close-knit community atmosphere. Residents enjoy access to surrounding Crown land for activities such as hiking, horseback riding, hunting, snowmobiling, and fishing in the many lakes and streams of the region. The local economy in Clinton has historically been anchored in ranching and agriculture, with the surrounding grasslands supporting cattle operations that have been central to the region for well over a century. Forestry has also played a supporting role in the broader area's employment base, as it has across much of the South Cariboo. Tourism contributes to the local economy as well, given Clinton's position along a well-travelled highway corridor and its proximity to guest ranches and recreational destinations that attract visitors throughout the year. The community offers essential amenities including general retail services, local dining options, fuel services, and access to healthcare and other services through nearby larger centres such as Cache Creek and Kamloops to the south. §5 · CLIMATE
Weather & climate in Clinton
Clinton, situated at approximately 1,000 metres elevation on the Fraser Plateau in British Columbia's Southern Interior, experiences a semi-arid continental climate with cold, snowy winters. Average temperatures from December through February typically range from around -5°C to -12°C, though Arctic outflow events can occasionally push nighttime lows well below -20°C. Snowfall is reliable and moderate, generally accumulating between 100 and 150 centimetres annually, and the elevated plateau setting means winters are notably cold and crisp compared to valley communities at lower elevations. Summers in Clinton are warm and relatively dry, with July and August daytime temperatures commonly ranging from 25°C to 30°C, while nights remain comfortably cool. The region receives limited summer precipitation, and residents are no strangers to wildfire smoke drifting in from surrounding Interior forests during peak fire season. Spring and fall are transitional seasons marked by rapid temperature swings, occasional late or early frosts, and periods of fog forming across the plateau. Clinton's semi-arid conditions, clear skies, and four distinct seasons give it a notably bright and open character throughout the year.
