Cedar is a small rural community located on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, in the Regional District of Nanaimo in British Columbia. Situated approximately 10 kilometres south of the city of Nanaimo, Cedar benefits from proximity to one of Vancouver Island's largest urban centres while maintaining a distinctly rural character. The area is characterized by gently rolling farmland, patches of coastal forest, and a rugged shoreline along the Strait of Georgia, which offers expansive views toward the Gulf Islands. Mudge Island and Link Island sit just offshore, adding to the scenic coastal setting. The surrounding landscape is dotted with small lakes and wetlands that contribute to the region's natural appeal. Cedar enjoys the mild, temperate climate typical of southeastern Vancouver Island, with warm, relatively dry summers and cool, wet winters, making it one of the more climatically comfortable areas in the province.
Cedar is a predominantly rural and semi-rural community with a modest, close-knit population. It does not function as an incorporated municipality but rather as an unincorporated area with a strong sense of community identity rooted in its agricultural and coastal heritage. The community is home to a notable arts presence and has a long-standing tradition of small-scale farming and acreage living. Cedar's rural atmosphere attracts residents who value privacy, open land, and a quieter pace of life, while still maintaining reasonable access to the urban services and amenities found in neighbouring Nanaimo. The area includes heritage farm properties, community gathering spaces, and natural areas that reflect its history as one of the older settled districts on Vancouver Island.
The local economy in Cedar is shaped by a blend of agriculture, small-scale resource industries, and trades, with many residents commuting to Nanaimo for employment in the broader regional economy. Agriculture continues to play a meaningful role, with hobby farms and market gardens representing a visible part of the community's identity. The arts and creative sector also contributes to the local character, supported by a community hall and cultural events that draw residents together. Basic amenities such as local shopping, community services, and recreational facilities are accessible within or near the community, with the full range of urban services, healthcare, and retail available in nearby Nanaimo. Cedar's combination of rural charm and proximity to a regional hub makes it a distinctive and well-rounded community on Vancouver Island. Cedar is a small rural community located just south of Nanaimo on the east coast of Vancouver Island, and it falls under a temperate oceanic climate classification. Winters are mild and wet, with average temperatures typically ranging from about 2°C to 8°C. Snowfall is infrequent and usually light, though brief accumulations do occur during colder Arctic outflow events that occasionally push down through the Georgia Strait. Summers in Cedar are warm and relatively dry, with average temperatures generally ranging from 14°C to 22°C, occasionally climbing higher during heat events. The east coast of Vancouver Island sits in a partial rain shadow cast by the island's central mountain spine, giving Cedar noticeably drier and sunnier summers than communities on the west coast. Wildfire smoke from interior BC fires can affect air quality during July and August. Spring and fall bring transitional fog, particularly in morning hours near low-lying areas, and the region experiences a fairly distinct wet season roughly spanning October through April.
