About Belcarra
Belcarra is a small village situated on the eastern shore of Indian Arm, a dramatic glacially carved fjord that extends northward from Burrard Inlet in the Greater Vancouver region of British Columbia. Nestled within the District of North Vancouver's broader regional context, Belcarra lies approximately 25 kilometres northeast of downtown Vancouver, accessible primarily via Port Moody to the south. The community is surrounded by the rugged coastal mountains of the Coast Range, dense temperate rainforest, and the deep blue waters of Indian Arm, with Burrard Inlet's tidal reaches forming part of its broader marine environment. The landscape is strikingly natural, with forested hillsides descending steeply toward the waterfront. Belcarra experiences a mild coastal climate characterized by warm, dry summers and wet, relatively mild winters, consistent with much of Metro Vancouver's weather patterns.
Belcarra is one of the smallest incorporated municipalities in British Columbia, with a population of only a few hundred residents, giving it a distinctly intimate and close-knit village atmosphere. The community is decidedly rural in character, defined by a deep connection to the surrounding natural environment, with much of its land base protected as part of Belcarra Regional Park, a beloved destination for hiking, swimming, and paddling along the shores of Indian Arm and Sasamat Lake. The park and the village's waterfront setting give Belcarra a tranquil, retreat-like quality that stands in notable contrast to the urbanized communities of Metro Vancouver. Heritage character is reflected in the community's long history as a recreational destination for Lower Mainland residents, a tradition that dates back well over a century.
Belcarra's economy is not driven by significant commercial or industrial activity within the village itself. The vast majority of working residents commute to employment centres in Port Moody, Coquitlam, Burnaby, or Vancouver, making the village functionally a residential enclave with a strong reliance on the broader regional economy. The local amenities within Belcarra are minimal, reflecting its small scale, and residents depend on nearby Port Moody and Coquitlam for everyday goods, services, healthcare, and education. Recreational amenities, however, are exceptional given the proximity to Belcarra Regional Park, which offers boat launches, picnic areas, swimming beaches, and an extensive trail network accessible to both residents and visitors from across the Lower Mainland.
