About Gold River

Gold River is a small municipality located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, situated in the Strathcona region of British Columbia. It lies approximately 90 kilometres west of Campbell River, which serves as the nearest regional hub and commercial centre. The community sits at the confluence of the Gold River and Heber River, surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Vancouver Island Ranges and the vast wilderness of Strathcona Provincial Park. Muchalat Inlet, an arm of Nootka Sound, extends nearby, connecting the area to the open Pacific and giving Gold River a distinctly coastal character despite its inland setting. The climate is temperate and wet, with mild winters and warm summers, shaped by the Pacific Ocean and the sheltering influence of the surrounding mountains. Gold River carries the distinction of being the first fully pre-planned instant town in Canada, designed and built in the 1960s to house workers for a pulp mill that once anchored the local economy. The community has a small population of roughly 1,300 residents, giving it a tight-knit, village-like atmosphere where neighbours tend to know one another and community involvement is a hallmark of daily life. Outdoor recreation plays a central role in the local lifestyle, with world-class kayaking, sport fishing, hiking, and caving drawing both residents and visitors. The nearby cave systems, including some of the longest known caves in Canada, and the scenic wilderness of Strathcona Provincial Park contribute to the area's sense of adventure and natural wonder. A passenger and freight ferry service historically connected Gold River to the remote communities and First Nations villages along Nootka Sound, reflecting the area's deep ties to the surrounding coastal landscape. The economy of Gold River has undergone significant transformation since the closure of the original pulp mill in the late 1990s, and the community has since worked to diversify its economic base. Forestry and resource industries continue to play a role in the regional economy, and tourism has become an increasingly important sector, driven by the area's exceptional wilderness, fishing opportunities, and cultural heritage connected to the history of Nootka Sound. Local amenities include basic retail services, recreational facilities, and essential healthcare and educational services, providing residents with core daily needs within the community while larger shopping and specialized services are accessed in Campbell River. The municipality has made ongoing efforts to attract new residents and businesses, fostering a spirit of resilience and renewal.
