About Invermere
Invermere is a small town located in the Columbia Valley in the southeastern corner of British Columbia, nestled within the Rocky Mountain Trench approximately 140 kilometres north of the Alberta border and roughly 500 kilometres east of Vancouver. The community sits at the southern end of Windermere Lake, part of the upper Columbia River system, and is flanked by the Canadian Rockies to the east and the Purcell Mountains to the west. This dramatic alpine setting gives the area a distinguished four-season climate characterized by warm, sunny summers, cold and snowy winters, and relatively low annual precipitation compared to wetter coastal and inland regions of the province. The nearby city of Cranbrook, approximately 100 kilometres to the south, serves as the primary regional service hub.
Invermere has a population of roughly 3,000 to 4,000 residents and carries the distinct character of a small, recreation-oriented mountain town. The community has a walkable downtown core with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that reflects both its permanent population and the steady stream of visitors and seasonal residents drawn to the area throughout the year. Windermere Lake and the surrounding valley provide a scenic backdrop that deeply shapes local identity and lifestyle, with outdoor recreation central to daily life across all seasons. The broader Columbia Valley has a rich history tied to Indigenous peoples, early European settlement, and the development of the Canadian Pacific Railway, all of which have contributed to the region's cultural heritage and sense of place.
The local economy is anchored by tourism, outdoor recreation, and seasonal hospitality, with the area drawing visitors for skiing, hiking, cycling, boating, and golf. Retail, dining, and accommodation services form a significant part of the employment base, supported by a variety of locally owned and operated businesses. Health services, local government, and the broader service sector also contribute to year-round employment. Agriculture remains a presence in parts of the wider Columbia Valley, and the region has seen growing interest in arts and culture alongside its traditional resource and recreation economy. Residents generally access more specialized services and larger retail centres in Cranbrook or, for certain needs, in Alberta. The area offers a solid range of everyday amenities suited to small-town living with a strong recreational identity.
